Yoga Hangover Cure

I have my office Christmas party tomorrow night and while I don’t plan on waking up with a hangover on Saturday morning I thought I would share a few of my favourite yoga poses for relieving a hangover… you know, just in case ;)

I know for most people a greasy breakfast and a bottle of coke is the best way to cure a hangover, but I prefer a few detoxifying yoga poses, lots of water and a green smoothie, it’s a hangover cure that will fix you from the inside out.

I understand the green smoothie might be a bit too much to stomach but give the following poses a go and see if they make a difference:

Child’s pose – Take a few deep breaths in this pose with your head resting on the floor or a block, you can even place a bag of frozen peas under your forehead. You can also do this pose with your head resting on cold tiles… (like say the bathroom floor if you find yourself somewhat indisposed there). Pass out Stay in this pose for as long as you need to :)

Seated twist – What you really need to do after a big night on the drink is detox, and twisting helps to wring out the liver and help rid your body of all those toxins that are making you feel a bit lousy. Depending on how hungover you are this pose might make you feel a little bit queasy as it clears out your liver. Stay in the pose for as long as it is comfortable and remember to breath.

Headstand – Now this is probably one of the last things you will feel like doing but it will get the blood flowing and help relieve that pounding headache. If you are new to yoga leave your knees on the ground and come on to the top of your head, this is all you need to do to get the blood flowing. If you want to go a bit further you can tuck the toe and begin to walk your feet towards your head. And if you know your way around a yoga mat you can come all the way up, using the wall if you need to – remember you might be a little less steady than usual.

Once you are done you can pass out in savasana, and remember it doesn’t matter how perfect the pose is, just focus on your breath and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
